Have you experienced the divine sleep of Yoga Nidra? It is a powerful technique in which you learn to consciously relax. The body may appear to be asleep, but the mind is awake, and the consciousness is functioning at a deep level of awareness. Swami Satyananda Saraswati says, "Yoga Nidra is the doorway to samadhi." Scientists show how brainwave patterns change from beta (awake, alert) to alpha (deep relaxation) to theta (dreaming sleep) to delta (deep sleep). The practice of Yoga Nidra leads you from your typical beta state into the alpha and theta states. The consciousness is poised on the borderline between wakefulness and dreaming for an extended period of time. Psychologists call this state between wakefulness and dreaming the hypnagogic state. Prior to entering this relaxed and receptive state, you may choose to plant a seed of intention, knowing that the consciousness is receptive to accessing the deep wisdom of the body, or simply rest, completely and thoroughly. It is said that 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra is as relaxing and beneficial as four hours of sleep.
